It's not often that we in the American cross-country community get this much excitement in such a short amount of time. The national news media would have you believe that there just isn't any fun to be had at all. According to the New York Times preview of the Pyeongchang Olympics "cross country skiing is where the elegant majesty of winter sports goes to die an excruciatingly drawn-out death." But we knew better. And then Jessie Diggins and Kikkan Randall showed the world how thrilling the sport could be. Congrats to them and the rest of the US Ski Team for putting together an amazing and inspiring 2018 Olympics!
In addition, American cross-country skiing's homecoming weekend--the Birkie--was (finally!) back! There was real and abundant snow to enjoy and a new start area from which to begin the adventure. With the racing spread out over three days and all the finishes on Main Street in Hayward there was a whole new festival atmosphere. Lovely weather to boot! To cap it all off, Peak Nordic alumnus Felicia Gesior won the women's classic Birkie.
Thanks to all who volunteered during Birkie week events and congrats to all who raced!
